Bust of Garibaldi
Author : Ignoto scultore
Period: Early 20th century
Measures H x L x P
Giuseppe Garibaldi, a leading figure and national hero of the Italian Risorgimento, was the subject of numerous celebratory artistic representations, intended for both public buildings and private residences. This terracotta bust is a significant example. The work portrays the patriot in his later years, with his thick beard and wearing the typical Garibaldino jacket, fastened with buttons arranged laterally, which became a symbol of the volunteers who followed Garibaldi in military campaigns and especially during the Expedition of the Thousand in 1860. Tied around his neck is the ever-present bandana, used to protect against wind, cold, and dust, a characteristic iconographic element in Garibaldi's depictions. Garibaldi was born in Nice in 1807 and maintained a strong connection with Genoa and eastern Liguria (where his ancestors originated), a connection that, through his image, continues to this day. What strikes is the intense and concentrated gaze that accentuates the character's strength of personality; the sculptor has managed to capture his soul, and looking at him, one is led to wonder what he is thinking...
