Pair of ampoules
Period: 17th century
Precious pair of small ampoules with an ovoid body in blue glass, finished in finely embossed silver and decorated with grotesque masks. The ampoules rest on circular bases and have two side handles that support the insertion of the caps. The precious metal frame, in addition to its structural function, had the purpose of ennobling and enhancing the object, giving it prestige and making it a symbol of high social standing. Intended to contain elixirs, perfumes or other precious substances, the ampoules, due to their small size, were particularly suitable for use as toiletries, as refined gifts or as collectibles intended for display in Wunderkammern. Made with great finesse, balance and proportion, they are attributable to Medici production between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The glass, with its intense and uniform blue hue, appears more compact and heavier than contemporary Venetian productions, to which artifacts of this type were often attributed in the past. It is known, however, that from the end of the 16th century, the Medici promoted a glass production alternative to that of Murano, establishing grand-ducal furnaces in which Venetian master glassmakers also worked, often coming directly from the lagoon island. Uncommon objects, in excellent condition, with original frames (often melted down over time), intact glass and an intense blue (a less common shade than colorless or greenish glass) and especially presented in pairs, constitute a true collector's rarity. Unmissable! Dimensions: height 15 cm - base diameter 5.5 cm
